A surprise from Apple announced today that they will hold an extraordinary brief to journalists and some users in particular to address the concerns over the iPhone 4 antennae problems.

The phone was only launched last month, in June 2010, and some users had complained of poor reception problems. When asked by media reporters if the briefing will address the prime concerns the company could neither confirm one way or another.

The way the company have handled the issue so far has displeased many a user critics alike. A strategic communications company has already stated that Apple’s reputation as rock solid company is under threat following the way it had handled the crisis. It has been suggested that twitter and facebook comments could be blown out to unveil a wider issue of discontent.

Users, some of whom queued long into the night on June 24, 2010 to grab the first day release of the iPhone 4 have complained that calls are dropping out after a few minutes and often they cut out altogether when gripping too tightly around the left hand side of the model. In fact Apple have been accused in some quarters of blaming users for getting ’all worked up over nothing’ and ‘ just a few days of rumours’ and that bloggers at Apple should just ’Calm Down!’. Now, the authenticity of those terse comments have been verified but nonetheless Apple should have ’step up to the plate and faced the problem head on..’ says Rob (from EnderleGroup).

Apple did announce on July 2 that it was surprised and suggested it was the signal bars display that was the issue and that the signal itself was not the problem.

Now, a recall is not financially the way forward at a cost of over a billion dollars. If they were to issue rubber bumpers (for gratis of course) it would cost far less at around 0m.

The demand for iPhones however remains strong and this issue has not impacted on sales. Indeed, Apple are struggling to supply in the face of demand as there is a shortage of the screen fronts currently.

In video conference, HTC is the winner again. Conversely, iPhone4 supports only WiFi for video calls without being able to effectively reduce connectivity problems.

Specifically, iPhone4 costs 0 and offers a 16GB internal memory while the 32GB version costs 0. HTC on the hand costs 0 offering a free 8GB microSD card but demands at least 0 more for a 32 one.

After bullheadedly ignoring the problems with their new iPhone, Apple has finally come forward and offered an explanation for their device’s issues.

Despite the fact that this seems to mark a major shift in Apple’s attitudes toward their iPhone4 customers, it’s simply not enough. This becomes incredibly apparent when you read the text of Apple’s letter.

Apple starts the letter by acknowledging the widely-publicized issue exists. “Some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.”

However, Apple’s apology takes a hard right turn into fantasy land immediately thereafter.

Apple claims to have discovered the reason behind the problem. And it’s software-related. “Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars.”

Is this at least somewhat plausible? Yes. Is this glitch completely responsible? Absolutely not.

The biggest problem with this explanation is that it doesn’t even begin to explain why holding the phone with your left hand causes dropped calls. A more accurate reckoning of how many bars you actually have is great (unless you’re AT&T, at which point your customers will realize how bad your network actually is). However, even if callers only actually have three bars when it looks like they have five, this doesn’t explain why those three bars disappear when you touch the phone.

Apple’s indignantly refusing to remedy the problem that everyone who’s held an iPhone4 has been able to replicate. Sure, holding my iPhone 3G in a certain way will cause it to lose a bar. However, it won’t cause it to drop a call from a five-bar signal, like the iPhone.

It’s called a design flaw, Apple. Sure, it’s not as bad as the exploding gas tanks on the Ford Pinto, but an iPhone without the phone is nothing but an overly-expensive iPod Touch. And you need to make it right.

However, based on the policy that the Applecare hotline has been pushing, Apple doesn’t appear willing to do much. In the words of the policy itself, “We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.”

The letter also fails to address the “you’re holding it wrong” idiocy that Apple has been perpetuating. Sure, there is a way to hold the phone that doesn’t touch the area in question, but it involves clinging on to the phone by the slippery glass back, a recipe for disaster. Steve Jobs’ solution is no better.

While it would seem, at least on its face, that Apple’s apology is an attempt to sincerely address the issue, it falls short. Upon reading the letter, it becomes apparent that the apology is insincere at best and patronizing at worst. It’s a start, for sure, but Apple must go the extra mile and devise a fix for the hardware problem plaguing their device.

The new iPhone has been released – iPhone 3G S.

Apple called this iPhone ’3G S’ where the S refers to it’s amazing speed. The main upgrade of this iPhone is the speed and probably the only and biggest reason that may attract you to upgrade to this new version.

There are not much features apart from the above mentioned big one that may attract people. From the outside, this new iPhone is just the same as its predecessor was. In fact, it is exactly the same if you leave few things. This new model is slightly heavier with glossy text on the back.

The screen is more reflective (slightly) as it has the new resistant for the fingerprints – ‘oleophobic’ coating. Also it shows a rainbow effect when you reflect a monitor with this iPhone. Actually, the coating works for preventing the fingerprints and face grease, but it remains the gadget still smooth and usable even when there are fingerprints on it.
This iPhone does not have the sticking problem even in the areas that are relatively greasier.

It is also easy to clean it just by using your shirt.

The 3GS display is slightly warmer than its previous version as it has a yellow/orange tint. The warm screen is easier on the eyes even when the brightness is very high. The video playback proves the claimed improved speed. It features Safari for browsing, camera working very fast as it comes with 3.0 software, and even booting the device takes just half the regular time. The apps that take long loading times like Sims 3, Metal Gear Touch and Oregon Trail… all of them work much faster. Everything is really faster than ever. It’s like switching from an old computer to the newly launched speedy machine.

The iPhone 3GS features a CPU with 600MHz and 256MB RAM (changed form 400MHz and 128MB) so, a much higher performance for the future apps! The OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics standard is also great for the visual boost.

One important thing to note is that the iPhone 3G will run most of the future games as stated by Apple, so some of you may not want to switch.

The new iPhone has a 3 megapixel camera that with video recording auto focus. The interface is very good, it allows you to tap a section that you want to focus on and it automatically adjusts the focus to that point.

Now, talk about video quality, it is really good. According to Apple, it is up to 30 frames every second and it comes pretty close. The video is smooth as hell, the recording part is not great in deemed light as it’s a limitation of the camera. The ‘tap-to-focus’ feature carries over to video, so you can use it to ‘aim’ the camera at a specific part of a scene.

The Nike+ support works fine, it enables you all to run the features smoothly. It comes with a stereo Bluetooth headset, so listen to music, run and also answer a call.

The Voice control feature work fin too as long as you know the right commands. The accuracy is really great and this app recognizes what you say provided there is no too much noise in the background. And interestingly, if you have contacts with similar names, then it will call all the similar names asking you to be more specific.

At last we come to the price. If the 3G users are eligible for an upgrade in the month of July, August or September, then AT&T invites you to do so at the subsidized rates – 9/9 price under different monthly plans. And if you are not eligible, then wait until your 18 months are up.
